There are times when very difficult decisions must be made. This is definitely one of those times for South-Central Colorado Seniors.
In today’s economy, individuals, businesses and non-profits are having financial difficulties. South-Central Colorado Seniors is no exception. As we all know, the increase in fuel prices impacts not just food delivery costs but other areas such as food costs. In addition, South-Central Colorado Seniors has recently had some major equipment repair and replacement expenses this year. Unfortunately and regrettably, as a result, after much discussion and consideration, we are faced with having to make the very difficult decision of reducing our 5-day- a-week meal service in the Nutrition Program to three days a week starting the week of May 6, 2013 through June 30th. SCCS’ first and highest priority program has been and continues to be the Nutrition Program especially senior’s home-delivered meals to homebound clients. Our first priority is to get senior’s home-delivered meals back to full service as soon as possible.
SCCS serves nine meal sites. This fiscal year, within the months of July, 2012 through March, 2013, SCCS has served 288 congregate consumers for a total 26,134 meals and 240 homebound seniors for a total of 26,675 meals. Combining congregate and homebound this is 517 seniors for a total of 52,809 meals. Please note that it is possible for some seniors to receive both a congregate meal and a home-delivered meal.
The sites with meals prepared by the Monte Vista Kitchen, (Monte Vista, Del Norte, Center, and Saguache), will be closed Thursdays and Fridays. The sites with meals prepared by the Alamosa Kitchen, (Alamosa, La Jara and Antonito) will be closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
We ask that if you know of a senior that is in a situation of having no food or a way of acquiring food, please contact South-Central Colorado Seniors and we will make sure this individual is taken care of.
This was a very difficult decision and one we would have rather not had to make. We at South-Central Colorado Seniors thank you for your understanding and appreciate your cooperation. For questions or further information we ask that you contact South-Central Colorado Seniors at 589-4511.
