ALAMOSA— About 22 participants in the Adams State University Larry Holder Exercise and Cancer Survivorship program were honored at a Celebration of Accomplishment event held at the Alamosa Family Recreation Center in Alamosa on April 25.

The program, now in its fifth year, offers cancer survivors the opportunity to participate in an individualized program conducted in group settings and meets three times a week.

Aside from providing benefits to the participants, graduate students with the ASU Department of Kinesiology receive valuable training through their direct work with those in the exercise classes.

The program is free, and participants are requested a commit to completing the 12-week- program to provide accurate information to the graduate students. Those in the class develop a camaraderie. About 10 of the 22 participants at the celebration have been in the program for three years.

The San Luis Valley Health Foundation funds the program, Kelly Gurule, Director of the foundation said, "We are really honored to be a part of the program and help manage the funds that support the program. We couldn't do it without our donors and the community's support. We are proud of how this program helps our cancer survivors, their families, and friends."

The program will begin another class in the fall and those interested should contact Peggy Johnson at [email protected].
