Gwen L. Purcell, 75

Gwen L. Purcell was born on May 15, 1937 in Alamosa, Colorado to Evelyn Marie Hindelang Smart and Eugene Ray Smart and departed this life on March 6, 2013 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Gwen was born and raised in Alamosa, Colorado and attended Alamosa Schools. She was always an excellent student.

Gwen is survived by her husband Lynn Purcell of Colorado Springs, brother Bennie L. (Wood) Smart (Sandy) of Malaga, New Jersey, sisters Rena M. Hunter and Donna F. Wood both of Alamosa.

Gwen is preceded in death by her parents Evelyn Wood and Eugene Ray Smart, her infant brother, Eugene Smart, her brothers, Lawrence (Joe) Wood and Gerald (Jerry) Wood and her sister Linda K. Wood.

Gwen worked at Safeway in Alamosa, Colorado for many years and enjoyed meeting new customers and waiting on her regulars. Gwen also worked as a Bookkeeper for Montgomery Ward in Alamosa and in Leadville, Colorado.

Gwen took great pride in her yard and especially loved her many, colorful flowers, and her beautiful lawn. She loved to pause and observe the beauty of nature all around her. Gwen was an amazing home decorator and her home showed it! Gwen’s mom often commented that Gwen’s home looked like it belonged in Better Homes and Gardens magazines.

Gwen loved animals, especially dogs and cats and always had a pet to call “her special friend.” She said her pets loved her unconditionally!

Gwen loved her family and in her younger years enjoyed hosting the family Christmas Eve gathering. Decorating for the Holidays was something she always looked forward to. Gwen was very generous and exuberant in her gift giving and always made each member of her family feel extra special! She took great care in picking out “just the right gift.” Gwen loved to bake cookies and make candy with her niece and enjoyed just spending time family. She will be missed …

Cremation was chosen and a memorial is planned for later date. A notice will be published at that time.
