Cumbres & Toltec plans special trips
Posted: Thursday, Jun 10th, 2010

ANTONITO — This year, Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad says “thanks” to dad on Father’s Day. Dads ride free, when accompanied by another family member, over the entire Father’s Day weekend from June 18 through June 20.

This special offer applies to coach class tickets only, and is valid for all three days of the weekend. The offer is a definite win-win Father’s Day event for the whole family.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is an historic gem, bringing the experience of the steam train era to visitors and train riders from far and near. The 64-mile narrow-gauge steam train runs daily from Chama, New Mexico to Antonito, Colorado (and vice-versa) from the end of May to mid-October.

The train is ridden annually by over 40,000 tourists who come to northern New Mexico and southern Colorado for an experience of a lifetime. The C&TS RR is co-owned by the states of New Mexico and Colorado and is overseen by a Bi-State Commission.

This year C&T is celebrating 40 years of this unique partnership and bi-state purchase. The train is funded by the states of New Mexico and Colorado.

Details and reservations for the Father’s Day Special can be obtained on the railroad’s website www.cumbrestoltec.com, or by telephone at 888-CUMBRES (888-286-2737).

Also this summer, the ever-popular Cinder Bear Train trips return to the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad schedule starting on Thursday, June 24. This popular child-oriented excursion will run every Thursday through August 12.

This kid’s special includes a round trip train ride from Chama to Cumbres Pass, with a picnic lunch, outdoor activities, and a Cinder Bear souvenir at the Cumbres Pass stop.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad again returns this popular children’s train to the schedule in 2010 with a total of eight different Cinder Bear Train trips. The kids’ oriented train ride will operate weekly starting on Thursday, June 24 and will run every Thursday. The season’s final Cinder Bear Express will run on Thursday, August 12.

The train ride departs the Chama Depot at 11 a.m. and takes kids and their family on a one-hour trip up to the summit of Cumbres Pass at over 10,000 feet altitude. The Train’s mascot, Cinder Bear will be on hand to greet guests and the special adventure begins — storytelling, games, songs and more.

The Cinder Bear Express train arrives back in Chama at 3 p.m.. This ticket fare includes the train ride, the lunch, all activities and the Cinder Bear memento.
