Bessey arrested for MV murders

Posted: Tuesday, Jan 8th, 2013

Daniel M. Bessey

VALLEY — A multi-agency investigation has led to the arrest of Daniel M. Bessey, 41, for the 2012 murders of John Salazar and Sarah Beasley.

On February 13, 2012 John Salazar, 54, and Sarah Beasley, 29, were shot to death at their shared home in Monte Vista. Salazar was a custodian with the Monte Vista school district. Beasley was a student at Trinidad State Junior College in Alamosa, and her three sons lived with the couple at the time of her death.

Officials from the Monte Vista Police Department, the Colorado State Patrol, and the Colorado Bureau of Investigation began the investigation into the killings immediately.

On Saturday, January 5, Daniel Bessey was arrested in Oklahoma on charges of murder in the first degree for the deaths of John Salazar and Sarah Beasley, first and second degree burglary, criminal mischief, three counts of child abuse, and reckless endangerment. The case was also charged as an act of domestic violence because Bessey did previously have a relationship with Beasley.

Bessey was residing in Thomas, Okla., at the time of his arrest and is presently being held in Beckham County, Okla. At the time of the shooting he was a resident of Saguache.

Bessey will be extradited back to Colorado to face charges. As of yet, no court date has been scheduled.

The Monte Vista Police Department would like to thank the Colorado State Patrol, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, local law enforcement officials from Oklahoma and Utah, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

“We are confident that justice will be done,” the MVPD stated in a press release issued through the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s office on Monday.

All defendants are presumed innocent until/unless convicted in a court of law.
