Roland Charles Atencio

Roland Charles Atencio,70, passed away June 17, 2019. He was born March 29, 1949 in Monte Vista, Colorado to Ida Mary Chavez and Manuel Atencio.

Roland worked mainly in the potato farms throughout his life, being a laborer as well as a loading foremen. He also obtained an Associate’s Degree in teaching and used his skills to teach migrant students here in the San Luis Valley. Roland enjoyed sports and he was very knowledgeable about team player names and status, he particularly loved the Dallas Cowboys and old western movies. He was excellent in math and an outstanding member of the Knights of Columbus where he held the title of a lifetime member. Roland always said his family was his most notable accomplishment in his life and always loved to make people laugh with his great sense of humor.

Roland is survived by his brother Robert Martinez of Monte Vista Colorado, his two children Michelle (Robb) McMillen and their two kids Seth and Kord of Sydney, Nebraska, Eric (Julie) Atencio of Alamosa, Colorado, his grandchildren Cruz (Anastasia) Gurule of Alamosa, Colorado, Jonathan Gurule (Lisa Pascoe) of Alamosa, Colorado, Noah Esquibel (Sara Mobbley) of Alamosa, Colorado, Ashanti Pena of Alamosa, Colorado, and great-grandchild Alejandro Cruz Gurule of Alamosa, Colorado.

He is preceded in death by his mother Ida Mary Martinez and his brother Ronnie Atencio.

A Rosary will be held at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monte Vista, Friday Colorado June 21, 2019 at 7:00 pm with a Mass to follow on Saturday June 22, 2019 at 10:00 am also at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Monte Vista, Colorado. Inurnment will follow after services at the Alamosa Cemetery.
