La Jara resident Lucy Atencio, 80, passed away June 21, 2017 at the Rio Grande Inn Nursing Home with her loving family by her side. Lucy was welcomed into this world on May 2, 1937 in La Jara, Colorado; the daughter of Joe T, Silva and Clarita Ortega Silva. She was united in marriage to Louis F. Atencio and the two shared a long and loving union until his passing. Lucy was an exceptional, kind and caring mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend who enjoyed going to bingo and gambling and caring for her children and grandchildren. She will be dearly missed.
Survivors include her daughters Shirley (Roy) Medina of Sanford, CO; Jackie (Daniel) Herrera of La Jara, CO; Penny Smith of Villa Grove, CO; sons Ray (Emily) Atencio of La Jara, CO; Gary (Sandra) Atencio of Alamosa, CO; 6 grandchildren Sara (Aaron) Black, Matt (Tiffany) Medina, Daniel Herrera, Ronnie Herrera, Andrea (Junior) Gardea, Sonia (Tommy) Melgares, 7 great-grandchildren Amaya Beck, Brandon Beck, Kristin Medina, Raziel Melgares, Jayden Lujan, Diego Gardea, Azaleah Gardea, god children Larry Silva, Jason Gurule; sisters Linda Silva, Lori (Lyle) Spohr both of Denver, CO; Margie Espinoza of Rocky Ford, CO; Terry Garcia of San Jose, CA; brothers Roy (Patsy) Silva of Alamosa, CO; Lawrence Silva of Espanola, NM; special friend Efrem Torres of Capulin, CO. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews cousins and friends.
Lucy was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Clarita Silva, husband Louis F. Atencio, son Ronnie Atencio, grandchildren Roy Medina Jr., Jonathon Medina, brothers Joe Silva, Larry Silva, Louie Vargas, Alex Silva and Naldo Silva.
A Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Friday June 23, 2017 at 7:00 PM at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in La Jara. A Mass of the Resurrection will held on Saturday, June 24, 2017at 2:00 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Capulin. Interment will follow at the Capulin Cemetery. The care of arrangements have been entrusted to Romero Funeral Home of Antonito.
