First Street project update given

ALAMOSA — The project is currently 38 days behind schedule with a completion date now expected for September 19. First Street will continue to be closed to all traffic between Facility Drive and Sierra Avenue through the end of the project.

The most difficult phase of this project, which was the storm drainage main lines installation, is complete. The city’s contractor, Gardner Excavating, has encountered numerous undocumented and unlocated utility crossings in the First Street right of way, which have caused some of the delays. Gardner Excavating, City staff, Adams State University staff, Reynolds Engineering, and various utility staff have worked cooperatively to modify designs, adjust existing utility installations, and make adjustments to the project and event schedules in order to complete this project.

The city believes that the final utility conflict, a previously unlocated and undocumented fiber optic communication line owned by CenturyLink will be relocated in a timely manner. The city wishes to thank CenturyLink for their diligence in quickly designing the fix to this misplaced utility.

Gardner Excavating is currently working on the final portion of unsuitable material removal near the intersection of Monterey Avenue and has begun the installation of the curb, gutter, and sidewalk. Trucks loaded with gravel, concrete, and asphalt will be turning off Main Street (US 160) onto Edgemont Blvd. and adjacent streets. Please use caution when traveling in these areas.

The City of Alamosa thanks the public in advance for its help in avoiding travel on First Street during this project. For additional information please contact the Public Works Department at 719-589-6631.
