Alverta “Al” Lee King, Jr., 88

Longtime Alamosa resident Alverta “Al” Lee King, Jr., 88, passed away April 27, 2017 at The Bridge at Alamosa Assisted Living Facility.

Al was born in Norfolk, Virginia the son of Alverta L. King, Sr. and Essie Mae Jones King on September 23, 1928.  Al married his sweetheart Elizabeth “Betsy” May Toogood on March 4, 1962 at the First United Methodist Church in Alamosa.  They enjoyed more than 35 years of marriage until her death.

Al’s working career began at a young age in Norfolk, Virginia at a drug store.  He entered into the U.S. Airforce and would serve until his retirement after 20 years.  Toward the end of his military career, he worked in Strategic Air Command.  Following his time in the military, Al moved to the San Luis Valley after meeting his soon-to-be wife Betsy.  They were married and he took a job at the local 66 garage and worked there for a couple of years.  Al joined the Colorado State Patrol as a dispatcher and retired from this job after 20 years.

He loved being in the outdoors and growing up in Virginia especially liked all things in and around the water including fishing, boating and duck hunting.  Al also enjoyed time spent in the mountains with his family camping.  In his spare time he could be found arrowhead hunting and shooting clays with his brother Leonard.  Al was a Life Boy Scout.

He is survived by his children Inge (Randolph Roberts) King of New York City, NY and Conchita (Dave) Beights of Glenwood, CO; his grandchildren Robert and Steven; his god-son Todd (Julie) Evans; his brothers and sisters Leonard King of Alamosa, Linda Wunnenberg of Chesapeake, VA, Leslie (Angie) King of Chesapeake, VA and Audrey Kraesig of Portsmouth, VA; his sister-in-law Marjorie (Emmett) Seal of Pueblo, Colorado as well as numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Al is preceded in death by his parents, his wife, an infant sister and two infant brothers, his brothers-in-law Robert Wunnenberg, Herbert S. Toogood III, and Robert Toogood; his sisters-in-law Virginia King and Jacque Toogood.

A visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 pm Wednesday, May 3, 2017 at the Rogers Family Mortuary in Alamosa.  A Funeral Service will be held 10:00 am Thursday, May 4, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church in Alamosa.  Interment with military honors will follow services in the Alamosa Cemetery.  Contributions in lieu of flowers are suggested to the Colorado Police Protective Association, 1485 Kelly Johnson Blvd, Suite 230, Colorado Springs, CO 80920 in his memory.
