Rose Marie Sanderson passed away December 23, 2013 in Albuquerque, New Mexico where she had resided with her daughter for the last 10 years. Born to Don Carlos and Della May Fitzpatrick on March 11, 1915, she was the first baby born in the new St. Joseph’s Hospital in Terre Haute, Indiana.
Her parents divorced when she was three. She traveled with her mother and grandmother to Los Angeles, California where she spent her childhood. She began playing the piano at a very young age, studied at the Los Angeles Music Conservatory, and was teaching piano lessons by age 14. She taught children of many celebrities including Eddie Cantor’s daughters, Gloria Swanson’s daughter and her favorite, Shirley Temple. She graduated Hollywood High School in 1933.
Her childhood friend’s husband arranged a blind date with his cousin from Colorado. She was not keen on the idea but 2 years later on June 26, 1938, they were married under an apricot tree on her family’s lawn. Lauren brought his bride to the San Luis Valley introducing her to farm life. Having spent her teens at the piano, domesticity was a foreign subject. She rolled up her sleeves to meet the new challenge. She became a very good cook, a self taught seamstress, knitter, and a master gardener.
Music filled her life with great pleasure and she was always willing to share her talent. She gave piano lessons to many children. When she started teaching the grandchildren of previous students she felt it was time to retire. When the Organist at her church retired, she agreed to give it a try never having played one before. Thirty years later, she too, retired.
Through the years she and her daughters provided many musical programs for the community.
RoseMarie was a Past Matron and a 69 year member of Bethlehem Chapter Order of Eastern Star. She served as Grand Organist in 1960-61. She was a Past Mother Advisor of Monte Vista Rainbow Assembly.
Playing Bridge was her “get away” with her belonging to several clubs. She and her bridge buddies would travel to various places just to play bridge even stopping to play on a picnic table in the woods.
RoseMarie and Lauren raised five children. In 1972 they sold their farm and built a new home on Stoeber Lane. They enjoyed having their children, grandchildren, out of state relatives and friends visit them. Their children held celebrations for their 40th, 50th, with the 60th being a four day family reunion. Lauren passed away in September of that year. She sold her home in 2003 moving to Albuquerque.
