ALAMOSA — Alamosa Mayor Kathy Rogers announced during Wednesday’s city council meeting she would not be seeking re-election.

Councilman Josef Lucero said he would be running for mayor, and Councilor Marcia Tuggle announced she would be seeking re-election as an at-large representative on council.

The mayor has served on council for nearly 12 years, the past four as mayor.

“I am going to announce I am not going to seek re-election as mayor,” Rogers said near the conclusion of Wednesday’s council meeting. “I have enjoyed every minute of it.”

She added, “After 12 years I want people not to be sick of me.”

She said this has been the favorite thing she has ever done, and she has enjoyed working with the council and the community and had no plans to leave Alamosa. She said she would remain active in the community. Rogers continues to work as director of communications and marketing for San Luis Valley Health, the local medical complex.

Rogers’ term as mayor continues until the election this November. She was Alamosa’s first female mayor and followed long-time Mayor Farris Bervig who served for 24 years. Rogers had previously served as mayor pro tem.

“It’s been an honor,” Rogers said Wednesday night.

She added the city staff is amazing, and whoever would follow her as mayor would be fortunate to have the staff’s capable assistance.

Lucero said he tried to encourage Rogers to seek re-election, and he was saddened by the fact she decided not to run. He said although he had previously run for mayor, he had not run “against” anyone but “for” the city. He said he would be seeking the mayoral seat this year.

Lucero said he has been encouraged by family and friends to pursue the position.

“I have been on council for quite a few years and have a good understanding what the mayor’s responsibilities are,” he said.

He has served as mayor pro tem in the past. He is currently serving as an at-large councilor.

Tuggle has served in the past as a Ward 4 councilor and currently is an at-large councilor. She said on Wednesday night she would definitely be seeking re-election to the at-large position.

“I am very excited about it,” she said. “I really love serving on city council.”

Alamosa City Clerk Judy Egbert said she plans a 6 p.m. orientation on Monday, August 5, for anyone interested in running for city council.
