ALAMOSA—A two-day tennis tournament sponsored by Tu Casa to raise money for the Children’s Advocacy Center took place at the Carroll Park courts on Friday and Saturday.

The tournament drew about 50 tennis players from the Valley and tournament organizers are looking to make this an annual tournament with more players anticipated in the coming years. There were players in the tournament that had not picked up a racquet in years and this tournament has gotten them re-energized for tennis in the Valley.

This past weekend there were nine brackets for players to play in and they were put in their respective brackets based on skills.

In the Men’s A Singles 3.5 and above bracket, Dick Clark defeated Tim Wall (no score available) while in the Men’s A Doubles bracket Dick Clark teamed up with John Cryer to defeat Tim Wall and Todd Mortenson with scores of 2-6, 6-2 and 1-0.

In the Men’s B Singles 3.0 and below bracket, Michael Arthalony defeated Miguel Cendejas with scores of 6-4 and 6-3. In the Men’s B Doubles, Charlie Reich and Mark Loy took the title over Matt Seger and Jed Ellithorpe.

In the Women’s A Singles 3.5 and above bracket, Rona Clark defeated Amy Strasser-Garcia 6-1, 6-0 before she teamed with Judy Allen in the Women’s A Doubles bracket to defeat Strasser-Garcia and Sara Gust.

In the Women’s B Singles 3.0 and below Jenene Holcomb took a win over Heidi Heredia with scores of 6-4, 3-6 and 1-0. Heredia did get a title on the day though as she teamed with Shelia Bower to get the win in the Women’s B Doubles bracket by defeating Wendi Seger and Lisa Ellithorpe.

In the Women’s B Doubles Bracket the two teams that made it to the championship match Bower/Heredia and Seger/Ellithorpe both upset the two higher seeded teams in their division of Holcomb/Abeyta and Porter/Brink. There was no surprise that Clark & Cryer took the Men’s A Bracket and that Allen & Clark took the Women’s A.

In the Mixed Doubles C 2.5 and below Donna Wehe and Ryan Wehe defeated Jed Ellithorpe and Lisa Ellithorpe.

According to the event chair, Wendi Seger, so far there has been around $7000 raised for the Children’s Advocacy Center.

“The event has re-opened the San Luis Valley Tennis Association,” said Seger of the success of the tournament. “There is a big push from the community to include a juniors bracket next year. Valley tennis players voiced pride in doing their part to raise money for the Children’s Advocacy Center. It gave the event more meaning than just competition.”

She also explained that most games went into a tie break as competitors took the event seriously and gave it their all.

Tennis enthusiasts are excited for court resurfacing that is happening soon and have visions of an indoor facility for the Valley in the future. It was also mentioned that Rona Clark runs a Thursday night drop in tennis at 4:30 p.m. for kids and 6 p.m. for adults at Carroll Park. There is no cost and no skill required to participate. All that is needed is a good attitude and willingness to learn.

“Preparation is already underway for a 2014 event,” said Seger. She noted that next year’s tournament will be longer and they hope to draw in a younger crowd.
