Board endorses Amendment 66

ALAMOSA — Monday night, the Alamosa School Board voted to endorse Amendment 66, with only one member voting against it.

Neil Hammer, Vice President of the Board, expressed concern. “My problem with Amendment 66 is that this is not the first time the legislature has promised that funds will be earmarked for education, and then later started using for other things. What’s going to stop them from cutting school budgets again?”

According to Dennis Carlson, Director of the Colorado Education Association’s San Luis UniServ Office, explained that any funds raised as a result of Amendment 66 would be “locked in” to the School Education Achievement Fund, which is constitutionally protected from any use other than improvements in the classroom.

“Colorado was ranked 39th in the nation in terms of per pupil funding,” Carlson said. “Montana paid more than Colorado.”
