FORT GARLAND — Celebrate Women's History Month at the Fort on Thursday, March 13, at 6 p.m. when Mari Centeno’s presents, "Las Sufragistas: Latina Suffragists of the Borderlands."
Our history course units on women’s suffrage taught us about Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and, just maybe, Alice Paul. If we were lucky, our textbooks might have spared a sentence for Ida B. Wells, one of many Black suffragists.
But how many have ever heard the mere mention of the names: Nina Otero-Warren, Jovita Idar or any of the other Latina/o suffragists, at school, or anywhere? Come discover more about the invisible history of those who maintained strength in their cultures while crossing boundaries to fight for the rights of women.
Centeno is a Political Science and Gender Studies professor at Adams State University. She is the current President of the University’s Faculty Senate, has led both the Adams State LatinX Caucus and Women of Higher Education organizations, and sits on the Advisory Board of the Center for Colorado Women’s History. In her free time, she occasionally hosts the podcast “Unruly con Mari C," which covers women in history and politics. Centeno is a proud Latina mother, teacher, activist, and sometimes scholar.
This event is free and open to the public. The Fort Garland Museum and Cultural Center is located at 29477 CO-159 in Fort Garland. For more information, call 719-379-3512.
