Lifelong San Luis resident Abel "Walter" Romero passed away Oct. 29, 2023, at his home. Walter was welcomed into the world on April 14, 1966, in San Luis, Colo., the beloved son of Leo Romero and Mary Duran.

After he graduated from high school, he went on to work in construction for many years. Anyone who knew Walter knew he was an animal lover and a whistler. He enjoyed singing, fishing, cooking and was a sports fanatic. His favorite teams were the Denver Broncos and the Denver Nuggets. He was a kind, caring and loving person and friend to all and he will be surely missed.

His memory will live on through his loving daughters Lorroya (Jose) Martinez, Shania Gonzales-Romero, Deni-Leigh Gonzales-Romero, Adelia Romero all of San Luis, Colo.; granddaughter Jacklin Johnson, sisters Evelyna (Frank) Mondragon of Pueblo, Colo.; Julie (Arnold) Lopez of Denver, Colo.; Dolores (Ron) Barela of Denver, Colo.; Annette (Steven) Cariño of San Luis, Colo.; Juanita (Casey) Sanchez of San Luis, Colo.; brother Jimmie (Pam) Romero of Amalia, N.M., spouse Ruby Vigil of Romeo, Colo. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Mary Romero and his niece Lisa Barela.

Vigil Service with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Thursday, Nov. 2, 2023, at 6 p.m. at Sangre De Cristo Catholic Church in San Luis. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Friday, Nov. 3, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Ft. Garland. Interment will follow at the San Acacio Cemetery.
