ALAMOSA — An accident on Wolf Creek Pass involving a commercial tractor-trailer killed the driver and called for a hazardous materials clean-up when 20 gallons of diesel fuel spilled into Wolf Creek.
According to Colorado State Patrol Capt. Steve Johnson, at about 9:54 p.m. on Sunday night, a commercial tractor trailer was headed eastbound on Highway 160 when it went off the road, hit a guardrail and then went into the river below. The accident took place at mile post 175 just east of the tunnel.
According to Johnson, conditions required that the truck stay in the river until the next morning, at which time it was recovered.
The name of the driver is not being released at this time, but he has been described as a 58-year-old man from Fort Lupton.
The accident is still under investigation at the time but, Johnson says, “There is nothing noting that alcohol or drugs were involved in any way.”
