Joining thousands of demonstrations across the country, more than 50 Alamosa High School students gather in the stadium Wednesday morning after walking out of school to protest gun violence and urge Congress to pass gun control legislation. The 17-minute walkout was also held to remember the 17 lives lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla. one month ago.
Below, Alamosa High School sophomore Alize Sanchez, center, leads the crowd in chanting "Enough is enough!" alongside event organizer Lindsy Williams, Eldin Lopez and Marisa Arellano during the walkout on Wednesday before having a moment of silence. "We should be able to feel safe in our own school in our own town," said Sanchez when asked why she and the others lead the local walkout.
Ortega Middle School, Monte Vista High School, Center High School, Creede Consolidated School District, South Conejos School District and Del Norte High School also openly participated in the walkouts on Wednesday.
Centennial School District, Moffat Consolidated School District and Mountain Valley School District had alternate activities such as a "Stand Up" or "Walk Up" events instead of walkouts.
Sanford, Sangre de Cristo, Sargent and Sierra Grande school districts did not participate. North Conejos School District Superintendent Curt Wilson could not be reached.
