MONTE VISTA – The San Luis Valley Rattlers mountain biking team posted great results in the second race of the season Sunday at the Haymaker Classic in Eagle on Sunday. This race is famous for its “corkscrew” downhill feature.
Monte Vista sophomore Will Walker participated in the sophomore boys race and posted the team’s fasted course time and maintained 11th place. Fellow Monte Vista sophomore Owen Barr passed three riders and improved his ranking to 24th.
Senior Summit Mashburn and juniors Chevy Kincannon and Aiden Mashburn competed in the boys JV race. The brothers started one row apart in the 44th and 45th positions, respectively, with Kincannon in 58th place. Team co-captain Summit logged a course time of 38 seconds more than an hour to gain one position to 43rd, Aiden slipped back one place. Kincannon much improved his position to 48th. The boys JV division is one of the largest field of racers with 108 riders.
In the girls JV race, co-captain Sydney Woodke missed competing because of an injury, but her younger sister, Jayda, started in 10th place in her second girls freshman race. However, suffered a season-ending injury.
Because of safety concerns with approaching lightning, race officials reduced the boys freshman division to just one lap. Freshman Cooper Webb and Kife Mashburn started the race with Webb gaining 11 places. Mashburn stayed with the main group and finished in 26th place.
The third race of the season will be in Fountain on Sept. 21.
