MONTE VISTA – Draft plans that explains strategies for managing deer and elk populations in Game Management Units 80 and 81 in the San Luis Valley are now available for viewing on the Colorado Parks and Wildlife web site.

To view the plan, go to cpw.state.co.us, type “herd management plans” in the search bar and follow the link to the page.

CPW is asking hunters, ranchers, and the general public to comment on the plan. Comments should be submitted by Nov. 27 to: brent.frankland@state.co.us; or mailed to Brent Frankland, 0722 S. Co. Road 1 East, Monte Vista, CO, 81144.

About every 10 years, CPW biologists evaluate big-game populations in specific areas and through input from hunters, farmers, ranchers and the general public, write a plan for those herds. The management plans take into consideration a variety of factors, including: hunter perception, harvest history, habitat availability, agricultural conflicts, forest management plans and social issues. When completed, the plans are used to set hunting license numbers.

CPW held scoping meetings for the plans in the San Luis Valley in July.  Those interested were also invited to take surveys. CPW will evaluate any new comments and make adjustments to the plan if necessary.
