Second annual Chili Cook-off is Saturday

ALAMOSA – In the second year of what is certain to become a much-anticipated annual tradition, the Alamosa/Great Sand Dunes KOA Journey Campground Chili Cook-off is happening on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.

This is a fundraising competition loaded with great food for a great cause, as all proceeds will be donated to the Care Camps Foundation, a foundation that sends kids with cancer to summer camps for a stay with families and siblings invited to come along.

Care Camps are created with children in mind as kids can enjoy all sorts of summer camp-like activities while parents can rest assured that medical support staff is on site to ensure the well-being of each summer camper.

For all who have an award (or contest) winning recipe for green or red chili, the entrée fee is $25 and for all of those who love to do the tasting, $10 will buy you the chance to taste as much good chili as your gullet can handle.

And the prizes are worth the effort, with a $500 prize going to first place red and first place green chili culinarians. Second place prizes (for each category) are a two-night stay in a rustic cabin on the KOA Journey Campground. Third place prizes (for each category) are a $50 gift certificate to Mammoth Gifts and Souvenirs on Main Street in Alamosa.

According to KOA Journey Campground owner Deb Hankinson, there are already 20 entries, but people can enter right up until noon.

The Alamosa/Great Sand Dunes KOA Journey Campground is at 6900 Juniper Lane, right off Highway 160 west of Alamosa.

Last year was a wild success and this year is likely to be better so load up your chili pots (or your appetites) and head to the KOA Journey Campground where you can taste some great chili and know you’re doing so for a good cause.
