ALAMOSA — Within the Southwest league the Farmers have flourished having gone a perfect 6-0 this year. Outside of the Southwest they are taking steps in the right direction earning their first non-league win last week against the Gilpin County Eagles.
This week while they will be facing a familiar opponent it is another non-league game. Sargent will have to defeat the West Grand Mustangs in order to advance to next week’s semifinals.
This year while the teams are meeting in the quarterfinals again things are slightly different, as it was West Grand that got out of the regular season unscathed this year. And instead of the quarterfinal taking place in Monte Vista, this year it will be in Kremmling, CO.
As with most 8 man squads the Mustangs are a run first team with 80 percent of the snaps resulting in runs. On the ground the Mustangs are supplanted by a stable of backs led by third year rusher Hugh Wheatley.
The Farmers utilize Ryan Davis in a similar manner with Davis passing for 1,031 yards and rushing 879 more. Davis has amassed 26 touchdowns for the Farmers thus far.
Sargent will go on the road for a quarterfinal rematch from last year with West Grand this Saturday Nov. 11 at 2 p.m.
