SARGENT SCHOOL – The Sargent High School boys basketball team had a rough time in its first home game of 2025 as it was defeated by Ignacio 48-27 on Tuesday.
Ignacio’s Trace Cane opened the scoring with a layup, but Lucas Garcia answered to tie the score at 2-2. Charley Pargin made two free throws to put the Bobcats back in front, but Fernando Venzor did the same to again deadlock the score.
Cane again gave Ignacio the lead, but Garcia, Venzor and Kade Temple all scored to give the Farmers a 10-6 advantage.
Ambrose Valdez hit a 3-point basket to reduce the lead to 10-9, but Temple made a three on the other end of the court. D.J. Hendren made a layup in the closing seconds of the first quarter, but Sargent led 13-11.
Garcia made two free throws to start the second quarter, but Valdez and Coty Webb both knocked jumpers to tie the score at 15-15. Webb and Pargin both scored to give the Bobcats a 19-15 advantage.
Venzor reduced the deficit to 19-18 with a 3-point basket, but Angelo Frost and Pargin both scored to increase the lead to 23-18. Garcia then split at the line and later made a layup to bring the Farmers within 23-21, but Cane ended the run with a layup.
Venzor drove for a layup, but Valdez scored four points and Webb two to close out the second quarter and Ignacio had a 31-23 lead at halftime.
Mitchell Peterson and Garcia scored the first four points of the third quarter, but Hendren scored seven straight points. Pargin then scored three points to push the lead to 41-27.
Cadyn Wright snapped the streak with a three, but Valdez answered with a layup. Wright scored again, but so did Valdez.
Garcia then split a pair of free throws, however, Frost and Valdez both hit jumpers. Corbin Castillo and Wright both scored to close out the third quarter, but the Bobcats led 49-37.
Webb and Cane scored the first four points of the fourth quarter, but Peterson hit a trey.
The Bobcats then scored the final 15 points of the game.
Garcia was Sargent’s leading scorer with 12 points, followed by Venzor with nine.
Valdez led all scorers with 15 points. Cane and Webb both scored 10.
Sargent (3-5) played at La Veta on Thursday. It will begin play in the Southern Peaks League on Jan. 23 by traveling to Center.
