Our beloved Samuel "Sumida" Gallegos, 81, was called home to rest on June 17, 2024. He passed away at the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center with his loving family by his side. Sumida made his grand entrance into the world on April 1, 1943. He was the beloved son of Daniel and Beatrice Gallegos.
Sumida was united in marriage to the love of his life Kate Pacheco on April 17, 1965. They shared a happy and loving union. Sumida was a self-taught mechanic who ran his business from his residence for over 60 years.
He was a car lover and loved building custom cars. His greatest joy was being able to build these custom cars with his family and loved ones for them, as well as other people in the community.
Everyone in the community can recall Sumida always helped anyone he could with fixing their car or any other problems they were having. He was selfless and a friend to all.
His kind and compassionate nature will forever be missed and cherished. In his free time,
Sumida also enjoyed going to bingo, gambling at the casinos, hauling wood and spending time with his family. The joy of riding in the '56 Chevy Bel Air meant the world to Sumida.
Sumida was preceded in death by his parents, two children Sammy Gallegos Jr., Kay Kayla Gallegos, three grandchildren, siblings Sofie Martinez, Connie Vaughn, Nicky Gallegos, Alonzo Gallegos, Tony Gallegos, Bernice Young, Irene Meas.
His memory will live on through his wife Kate Gallegos, daughters Debbie (Frank) Martinez of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Kimberly Gallegos of Alamosa, Colo.; son Joey Duran of San Luis, Colo.; 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, special niece Charlene Gallegos, brother Arthur Gallegos. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Cremation was chosen and Rosary will be held on July 12, 2024, at Sangre de Cristo Catholic Church at 7 p.m. Memorial Mass will be held July 13, 2024, at 10 a.m. Centennial High School. Inurnment will follow at the San Luis Cemetery.
