ALAMOSA – At the end of the evening, an unofficial count of the votes shows Democrat incumbent Rep. Matt Martinez victorious with 55% of the vote, garnering him a second term in the state House.
District 62 includes all six counties of the San Luis Valley and has been represented by Martinez since he was first sworn into office on Jan. 9, 2023, making this a victory for his second term.
Martinez was opposed by Republican and Monte Vista resident Carol Riggenbach. This was her second attempt to win the district after having lost to Martinez in 2022.
“I’m honored and humbled with the results from tonight with the continued trust and confidence from the people in the district. I’m going to continue to fight for southern Colorado and make sure we always have a seat at the table and always have a voice.
“My priorities are to continue education funding and getting economic opportunities to southern Colorado.”
Although the results are not official until certified by the Secretary of State, the tallies per county in the Valley were as follows:
Alamosa – Martinez: 51%; Riggenbach: 49%
Conejos – Martinez: 46%; Riggenbach: 54%
Costilla – Martinez: 64%; Riggenbach: 36%
Mineral – Martinez: 43%; Riggenbach: 57%
Rio Grande – Martinez: 43%; Riggenbach: 57%
Saguache – Martinez: 55%; Riggenbach: 48%
