Redskins tame Panthers on homecoming

Panther rusher Caleb Scharsch puts on the moves and makes two would be tacklers miss in the Sierra Grande backfield.

BLANCA— Of all the weeks for La Veta to come to town they came and spoiled homecoming, taking Sierra Grande down 53-19.
The Panthers had been waiting for a challenge not only winning the last 5 games, but taking them by an average 43 points.
La Veta and Cotopaxi were looking like Sierra Grande’s largest obstacles in the 6-man league. When La Veta put 71 points on Cotopaxi and knocked them out of the top ten it became apparent that La Veta was all the challenge they needed.

After going up 6 on a 38 yard connection from Arthur Rodriguez to Dakota Aragon the Panthers watched La Veta put up 16 and just like that Sierra Grande was having to do something they haven’t done all season, play from behind.

Early in the second quarter the Panthers got the extra possession they needed when Christian Dicristino recovered a loose ball. 62 yards later and tailback Aragon trotted out a 15-yarder to bring Sierra Grande within 3. Aragon gathered 28 yards off his 4 touches on the drive.

La Veta answered back immediately when Eric Morgan took the ensuing kickoff all the way back for a touchdown making it 13-24. When the Redskins failed to collect the onside attempt Sierra Grande started their next drive at midfield.

Sierra Grande made good on the advantageous field position capping off a 40-yard drive with a 19-yarder that went the distance from Freshman Caleb Scharsch to bring the Panthers back to one possession 19-24.

Again La Veta snapped back with a 68-yard connection from Gage Eddleman to Ty Warren to open the back up to 13 points late in the half.

La Veta sapped the Panthers spirit when Eric Morgan took a second kick 55 yards to paydirt. Sierra Grande would stay silent for the remainder of the half as La Veta put up 15 unanswered points to finalize the score.

Nobody likes to look past any games in their schedule but it will be tempting for Sierra Grande as they face winless Aguilar next week Oct. 13 before they go on the road to face Cotopaxi on Oct. 20.
