“Rebuilding”: the promise of a real good story

Filmed entirely in the San Luis Valley

ALAMOSA — It is very, very difficult to get a feature length film made these days, especially one that isn’t loaded with special effects and characters that can be easily turned into profit-making toys or games sold to kids.

But every once in a while, it still happens. Movies still get made that break that mold, find a place in viewers’ hearts and stay there for a long time.

The title of one of those movies is “Rebuilding”. Shot entirely in the San Luis Valley, “Rebuilding” had extensive involvement at all levels from people in the Valley and a storyline that is simple but rings true.

After wildfires take his ranch, a cowboy named Dusty winds up in a FEMA camp, finding community with others who lost homes, including his daughter and ex-wife.

“The trailer was just released this week by Bleecker Street,” says Katie Dokson who was co-producer on the film. “In the trailer, you can see familiar Valley locations like the Rio Grande near Los Sauces, the Monte Vista Livestock Auction, Capulin Library and La Jara Elementary school.

“Over 100 locals were involved in various positions. Production was based out of Alamosa with the costume department housed in the basement of a church in Monte Vista (now the Church Project building). We filmed in various locations in counties Alamosa, Conejos,  Costilla, Rio Grande and the city of Alamosa, Forbes park, Capulin and La Jara. Production during filming all took place in the San Luis Valley.

“To me, this is a story about community, family, loss and hope,” Dokson goes on to say. “So many people came together to make this film and I’m so thankful and excited for everyone to see it.”

The film, which was an official selection at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, was written and directed by Colorado native Max Walker-Silverman and features Josh O’Connor, Meghann Fahy and Lily LaTorre.

“Rebuilding” is scheduled to open in select theatres on November 14 and nationwide on November 21.
