Public invited to mini-conference on outdoor recreation at ASU

ALAMOSA — For those who love the great outdoors, an upcoming conference offers a great chance to learn more about outdoor recreation’s contribution to the local economy. It will also review the many resources available to those in the San Luis Valley who want to develop outdoor-related businesses. The community is welcome to attend the free Mini-Conference on Outdoor Recreation and Economy at the Adams State Student Union Banquet Rooms, from 1 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4. The conference is co-sponsored by San Luis Valley Great Outdoors Coalition (SLVGO), the Adams State Adventure Program, and the Salazar Rio Grande del Norte Center at Adams State.

Keynote speaker for the conference will be Lise Aageenbrug, a long-time friend of the San Luis Valley. Formerly executive director of Great Outdoors Colorado, she is now executive director of the Outdoor Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Outdoor Industry Association. “Activating a new generation of outdoor enthusiasts and consumers is one of the most pressing issues facing the outdoor industry today,” said Sally McCoy, former CamelBak CEO and Outdoor Foundation board chair. “Lise brings the Outdoor Foundation great strategic skills, a proven history in building participation outdoors, and a personal passion for the work. She will be a terrific collaborator and leader in these critical times.”

Additional speakers include various professionals from the SLV community sharing information on outdoor engagement and economic resources. Kevin Wilkins from SLV Development Resources Group will discuss the ways his organization can support business start-ups. Kevin Haas from the Windsor Hotel in Del Norte will share information on ways the hospitality business can partner with outdoor recreation. Eric Burt, owner of Kristi Mountain Sports, will share the story of his business. Video producer Christi Bode will talk about using video and social media for building businesses. Megan Strauss of the Alpine Adventures Initiative will discuss the VISTA program and how it can provide opportunities for students, organizations, and the community.
