Philip Gene West, 82, passed away at home, surrounded by his loving family, on March 8, 2025. Born on Feb. 20, 1943, Phil dedicated his life to his family, work, and the community he loved. A man of tremendous work ethic, Phil spent 35 years with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and an additional 22 years with Alamosa County Road and Bridge. He took immense pride in his work, always ensuring the job was done right.

Phil’s passion for his work was matched only by his love for his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend. A kind and generous soul, he was always willing to lend a helping hand. His love for his family knew no bounds, and he cherished every moment spent with them.

In addition to the love for his family, Phil had many interests that brought him great joy throughout his life. He enjoyed fishing and camping, often spending weekends outdoors with his family. He was an avid collector of antique tractors, a passion that showcased his appreciation for history. Phil was a skilled handyman, and found satisfaction in fixing anything that came his way. His dogs were an important part of his life, and they expressed their loyalty to a man who matched the same loyalty to his family. One of his greatest joys was hosting “Camp Grandpa,” a tradition he cherished, where he created lasting memories with his grandchildren.

Phil was an avid reader with a love for westerns and historical novels. A love for classic country, notably Johnny Cash, Waylon and Willy. He loved stories of the past, the people he worked with, and the friendships he made, these were the things he shared with anyone who would lend an ear.

In his younger years, Phil followed in his father’s footsteps by climbing local mountain peaks such as Mt. Blanca and Crestone Needle and enjoyed the thrill of 4-wheeling. He had an incredible knack for fixing anything, often saying there was no problem he couldn't solve. A keeper of all things, he maintained a home with a place for everything, and everything had its place. His attention to detail and dedication to preserving the things that mattered most to him will be remembered by all who knew him.

Phil always took pride in making a home for his family. His hard work, love, and generosity legacy will live on in those fortunate enough to know him. The love his family has for him is evident in three generations of Philips.

Phil is survived by the only girl he ever loved, his wife of 61 years, Gaynell; his daughters Kathy (Griz) and Karen (Andy); his son Philip (Annette); his grandchildren Karry (Alley), Juliann (Raul), Jaclyn (Jordan), Robbie, Alec (Lauren), Philip (Leah), Molly (Tyler), Ty, and Jacey; his great-grandchildren James, Michael, Cliff, Trey, and Dean; his sister Joann; and many other close family members.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles, mother, Edna, and brother, Chuck. His family will forever carry forward the lessons he taught them about love, work, and dedication.
