Sophomore Caleb Scharsch takes advantage of the open field. Scharsch carried the Panthers to their third straight win with 6 touchdowns.

BLANCA— Friday afternoon Sierra Grande (3-0) football handed Primero (2-1) a 64-27 defeat in a lopsided game that triggered the mercy rule.  

The Panthers came into this game looking dominant winning their last two games by a combined score of 122 triggering the mercy rule in one of those games as well. The Bulldogs also came in off a two game winning streak with wins over Antonito and Aguilar.

 Last time Sierra Grande met Primero was in September last year, Sierra Grande took that game as well by a score of 61-6. This year Dakota Aragon got things started with a 2 yard run for a touchdown to give the Panthers a lead they would never relinquish. Caleb Scharsch put Sierra Grande up 12-0 when their second extra point in a row got blocked.
 After Primero found the endzone to make it seem interesting Sierra Grande put their foot on the gas and went on a 32 point run.

Arthur Rodriguez scooped up a loose fumble and dipped in from 6 yards out with the first.  Rodriguez tossed a 9-yard pass to Raulito Minchaca as time expired in the half with the second and two more from Caleb Scharsch made it a 44-7 game with 4 minutes yet to play in the third.

When Primero struck again to make it 44-14 the Panthers answered with 3 more touchdowns from Scharsch to go up 64-14. Scharsch would find the endzone six times before regulation. In six-man leagues the mercy rule comes into effect with a 45-point lead rather than 40. With 6:20 seconds left in the fourth quarter and a 50-point deficit the refs kept the clock was continually running. With those 6 mintes Primero posted 14 unanswered points before failing on an onside kick and giving Sierra Grand the opportunity to kneel on it and close the game out 64-27. Sierra Grande will face the winless Cheraw Wolverines at home next Friday Sept. 22nd at 3 p.m.
