ALAMOSA — The Alamosa wrestlers had themselves a busy weekend. After having a dual with Montezuma-Cortez, which they took handily 73-3, they had to get up bright and early for their home tournament, the Alamosa Invitational. From 9 o’clock in the morning until the sun went down the 11 teams in attendance battled for supremacy.

The Mean Moose reigned supreme at their host tournament with 245 team points. For reference, the next closest finisher was Pueblo west who finished with 165 points. As a team the Moose exhibited a show of strength having 12 podium placements out of 14 weight classes.

Alamosa finished with four first, five second, and three third place finishers. With the first place matches going by weight class Colton Liddell was the first from Alamosa to top a podium.  Having rallied 3 falls on his way to the first place match Liddell looked to be on a warpath. In his first place match Liddell outscored Pueblo West’s Zach Cisneros taking the decision by a score of 9-8.

Joe Chavez had three matches on Saturday and ended all of them by way of fall.  In his first place match he dispatched Santino Mendoza from Rocky Ford. Up next was Tyler Kenison. Kenison had a decision a fall on the path to his first place match with Wesley VanMatre from John Mall.

Kenison would escape his first place match with a 3-2 victory in his pocket. The fourth and final first place finish was at 170 pounds by Tristen Harrington. Harrington’s first place match was just as close as he defeated Ben Long of Widefield by one point in a 3-2 decision.

Davion Chavez, Ben Vance, Zendon Bernal, Logan Thompson and Preston Duran each made it to a first place match to add five second place finishes to Alamosa’s impressive totals. While Elijah DeLaCerda, Hunter Smith and Kolten Hilis battled their way back through the Consolation bracket to take third place finishes.

Alamosa will go to war this coming weekend as the travel to Lafayette to take part in the Top of the Rockies wrestling tournament hosted by Centaurus. As the name suggests the Moose will face some of the very best that the state has to offer.  In 4A number one ranked Pueblo County and third ranked Pueblo East will be taking part; from 5A Poudre, Monarch and Brighton just to name a few.
