PUEBLO — Over the weekend the Alamosa wrestling team continued their season in Pueblo at the East Wrestling Invitational. At the event Alamosa faced the likes of at least four top ranked 4A teams. Spending all day on the mats Alamosa earned two championship berths. Both wound up taking second place. Joe Chavez dropped a decision to Nathan Bonham of Pueblo County by a score of 9-4 while Ben Vance also was relegated to second place due to a decision by a score of 4-0.
Alamosa also received third place finishes courtesy of Elijah DeLaCerda, Logan Thompson and Preston Duran. Thompson defeated Cañon City’s Gage Pruitt by a decision with a score of 8-6. Hunter Smith and Davion Chavez brought up the rear with two fourth place finishes taking Alamosa’s score to 172.5. Good enough for a third place finish behind Pueblo East and Pueblo County, ranked two and one respectively in On The Mat’s Dec. 8th 4A Wrestling rankings.
Alamosa was ranked second behind Valley in the 3A class in those same rankings. Alamosa will get in a little more tournament action before the Christmas break. The Mean Moose will be attending the “toughest tournament in the USA” as they travel to Nevada to take part in the Reno Tournament of Champions.
Last year Alamosa took 44th place out of over a hundred teams including B and C teams. This year the high school bracket is full to bursting with over 60 schools and will likely field a similar number of teams. Catch results at the Reno Tournament of Champions website as the Moose test their mettle from Dec. 15-16th.
