MONTE VISTA – The Alamosa High School recorded another win over a ranked opponent on Tuesday as it scored a 7-1 win over Monte Vista, ranked fourth in Class 2A, at Adrian M. Gutierrez Memorial Field.
“Evan Anderson did a great job starting,” said Alamosa coach Tony Kechter. “He threw a lot of strikes and the defense backed him up. We played probably one of the best defensive games we’ve had so far this year. I knew Monte can put the ball in play and hit the ball hard, but we made the plays.”
There was no scoring in the first inning, but the Mean Moose scored twice in the top of the second. Jonah Pittman led off with a single, and Brennan Maez followed that with a double. Jo David singled home Pittman, and A.J. Baker’s double brought Maez home.
Alamosa scored four more runs in the third. Jaidyn Burciaga had a leadoff single, and Tony Griego was hit by a pitch. Carlos Garcia doubled home Burciaga, and Pittman’s triple plated Griego and Garcia. Pittman came home on Maez’s groundout.
The Mean Moose added a run in the top of the fifth. Nelson Arambula led off by getting hit by a pitch and he took second on a wild pitch. David singled to drive in Arambula.
The Pirates averted the shutout with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Kaden Mellott drew a walk and took second on a wild pitch. Manny Jiron singled to put runners at the corners, and Jeremiah Baumgardner’s double brought Mellott home.
Anderson was the winning pitcher, and he allowed one run and four hits. He struck out six and walked two. Pittman relieved Anderson in the sixth and gave up no runs and no hits, while striking out one, and walking one.
Mellott started for the Pirates on the mound an took the loss. He allowed six runs and seven hits and he had one strikeout, no walks and he hit one batter. Landon Sanchez went to the hill in the third and he gave up one run and two hits, and he struck out four, walked two and hit two batters.
Alamosa was led offensively by David who went 2-2 with one RBI, and Pittman who went 2-3 with a triple and two RBIs.
Baumgardner led Monte Vista as he went 2-3 with a double and one RBI.
Alamosa (6-7) will open Intermountain League play today as it hosts Pagosa Springs. The first pitch of the opening game is at 11 a.m. at Ortega Middle School.
“This is really big,” Kechter said. “It’s like the preseason is over and now it’s the regular season. Our goal is to win the league.”
Monte Vista (5-3) will begin its Southern Peaks League schedule today by hosting Center. The first game begins at 11 a.m.
