Prior to Friday night the lady Mean Moose have put together a very respectable two game streak with one of those wins coming in the Intermountain League against Bayfield. Monte Vista took the court on a low note against Centauri in the week prior, hoping to end the dips into the red they had been suffering all season.
Alamosa jumped all over Monte Vista right away taking a 12-2 lead after one. Those two points came on two free throws from Monte Vista senior Mariah Barbosa. Barbosa would warm up in the second with two from outside the arc to pace the Pirates with 10 points on the night.
In the final chapter Alamosa senior Tara Sowards continued her upward tick adding 8 points before the end of regulation. Sowards totaled 10 points for Alamosa setting her second season best in as many weeks placing second on the team in scoring. Almosa would close the game at 54-18 for their third straight victory.
Alamosa sophomore Lilly Lavier was perfect from the charity line and added 8 buckets for a team leading 18 points on the night. After netting 3 straight head coach Shawn Cody seems to have the Mean Moose in the correct gear as the season winds down.
Alamosa’s boys answered any questions anyone may have had about slow starts when they came out with a fury against Buena Vista and rode the lead to a comfortable finish for their eleventh win of the season earlier this week. Monte Vista has been holding their breath since Dec. 15 when they got a big win at home over the Sanford Indians.
Darrius Garcia would move the mark for the Pirates in the third with 5 points propelling them to their highest scoring quarter in the third with 12 points. Garcia placed second on the team with 9 points. Unfortunately for the Pirates, Alamosa already enjoyed a 47-28 lead entering the final quarter of play. The Moose would lead Monte Vista all the way to the finish for the final score of 64-37. Kevin Castro led Monte Vista with 10 points on the night.
Monte Vista goes right back to work tonight as they face Pagosa Springs for the second and final time tonight in Monte Vista. Alamosa will continue their road trek with their series final against Montezuma-Cortez tonight.
