ALAMOSA – The Alamosa High School softball team played at home for the final time this season on Saturday as it hosted ninth-ranked Lamar at the Adams State University softball field.

The Mean Moose gave the Thunder all they could handle, but when all was said and done, Alamosa fell just short of the win by a score of 11-10.

“That’s a heavyweight fight,” said Alamosa coach Dominic Lomeli. “They punched and we punched back, but they punched a little harder and they ended up doing what they needed to win the game.”

Lamar struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning. Carlin Weber singled, and Alexa Aguilar followed with an inside-the-park home run and a 2-0 Thunder lead.

Alamosa responded with three runs in its half of the first. Taelynn Kreps-Smith drew a walk and took second on a passed ball. She came home as Araceli Molina reached on an error.

Shaya Martin then hit a line drive just past second baseman Yadi Roman and the ball went to the fence for a two-run inside-the-park homer and a 3-2 Mean Moose lead.

The Thunder regained the lead with a three-run second. Braelinn Penaflor led off with a single, and Roslyn Gonzales walked. Carlin Weber singled home Penaflor, and Alexa Aguilar singled to plate Gonzales.

Weber was forced out on Sierra Esqubel’s ground ball, but Roman was safe on an error, and Alexa Aguilar came home for a 5-3 Lamar lead.

The Thunder scored two more runs in the third. Alexus Campbell received a leadoff walk, and Penaflor singled. Campbell scored on Gonzales’ sacrifice fly, and Khloe Fernandez walked.

Penaflor was forced out on Weber’s grounder, but Alexa Aguilar hit a ground-rule double to score Fernandez.

Lamar scored two more runs in the top of the fourth. Roman singled and went to second on Natalie Aguilar’s sacrifice bunt. Campbell was safe on an outfield error and Roman came home on the play. Penaflor singled home Campbell for a 9-3 Thunder lead.

Alamosa scored twice in its half of the fourth. Haile Dupont tripled, and scored on Olivia Castillo’s three-bagger. Sydney Haslett singled home Annika Butero, who was courtesy running for Castillo, and the Mean Moose cut the deficit to 9-5.

Lamar scored once in the fifth. Alexa Aguilar tripled to complete a cycle, and she scored on Esquibel’s double.

The Mean Moose got back into the game with a four-run fifth. First Molina sent a line drive to left field between two Lamar fielders. Molina came around for an inside-the-park home run.

Shaya Martin continued the inning with a triple, and she scored as Leah Higareda was safe on an outfield error. Dupont singled home Higareda, and Castillo hit her second triple of the game to drive home Alyvia Miller, who was pinch running for Dupont to cut the deficit to 10-9.

The Thunder scored another run in the sixth. Fernandez reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second. She came home as Weber was safe on an error.

The Mean Moose scored once in their half of the sixth. Kreps-Smith singled and came home on Shaya Martin’s second triple.

After keeping Lamar off the board in the top of the seventh, Alamosa put a runner of base in the bottom of the inning. However, she was left stranded as the game ended.

Castillo went the distance as the Alamosa pitcher and she took the loss. He allowed 11 runs and 12 hits and she struck out one and walked six.

The Mean Moose had 10 hits and were led by Shaya Martin who went 3-4 with two triples, a home run and three RBIs, Dupont who went 2-3 with a triple and one RBI, and Castillo who went 2-4 with two triples and two RBIs.

Alamosa (14-8, 3-4) played at La Junta on Tuesday. It will now wait to see where it will go for a regional tournament and who will be its opponent.

“We put ourselves in a good spot,” Lomeli said. “It’s going to be tough. When you’re playing at this time of the years, you know you’re going to play a good team.”
