SAN LUIS — San Luis resident Mary Louise Serna, 93, passed away peacefully on Nov. 18, 2019 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Mary was born on Feb.  2, 1926 in San Luis, the daughter of Joseph and Emilia Montano Sato.

Mary was a member of the Sacred Heart Society. Her love for God was truly inspirational.

Mary was a loving daughter, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and god-mother who enjoyed cooking, going to bingo, crocheting, sewing, working at the church, and she was an incredible seamstress. She was an avid Denver Broncos, Denver Nuggets and Colorado Rockies fan. Her greatest joy in life came from the time she was able to spend with her family and friends.

She will live on through her children Cathy (Alberto) Egana of San Luis; Xavier (Grace) Serna  of San Luis; Sandra (Manesa) Epenesa of Albuquerque, N.M.; Regina Serna of Denver; Emily (Ray) Atencio of La Jara; John Serna and Toni both of San Luis; 12 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren, sister Cordie Kagohara of Denver; brother Kenji Sato of Midvale, Utah; sisters-in-laws Virginia Sato, Ida Serna, Lucy Serna, Marcella Serna, Mary Robles, and brothers-in-laws Teofilo Serna and Amos Serna. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and many God-children,

Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Emilia Sato; husband, Severo Serna; sisters Francesca Jolson, Betty Wussow; and brothers, Henry Sato and Leroy Sato.

The Vigil Services with Recitation of the Rosary will be held on Friday, Nov. 22, 2019 at 5 p.m. Sacred Heart Society and 7 p.m. Knights of Columbus at the Sangre de Cristo Catholic Church in San Luis. A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. also at the Sangre de Cristo Catholic Church.

Inurnment will follow at the Sangre de Cristo Cemetery.
