Mary Alice Smith, 93, joined her beloved husband Stewart in heaven on November 23, 2022. She passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family. Mary was born in Capulin, Colorado on July 27, 1929. She was the youngest child of Nick and Julia Malouff.
Mary was the valedictorian of her high school class. She attended college at Mt. St. Scholastica. She met her beloved Stewart, and they were married on September 5, 1949.
Mary and Stewart were the proud owners of the Zip and Pecos Café in La Jara, and later the Pecos Café in Center for many years.
Her greatest love was her family. She loved being surrounded by them at the dinner table, laughing, playing games, singing, dancing, and playing musical instruments. Mary enjoyed attending the yearly family reunion. She found love in everyone she met, and she touched the lives of many. Her contagious laugh and loving smile are only some characteristics her family and friends will miss.
Mary was the loving mother of Stewart Jr. “Butch” (Dixie) Smith, Tom (Vivian) Smith, Jackie (Fred) Knapp, Kenny (Dana) Smith, and Veva Pacheco. She was the loving grandmother of Jeff, Carey, Trisha, Amanda, Nikki, Shaun, Danielle, Claudia, Elizabeth, Nick, Jennifer, and Jason. She also had many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband Stewart; her brothers, Willie, John, Frank, Neff and Nimon; her sisters, Minnie McMillan, Annie Scavarda, Patricia Sivyer and Regina Mott; and her daughters-in-law, Dixie and Patty Smith.
A Recitation of the Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, November 28, 2022, at the St. Joseph Catholic Parish in Capulin, Colo. A Funeral Mass will take place at 10 a.m. Tuesday, November 29, 2022, also at the St. Joseph Catholic Parish in Capulin, Colo. Interment will follow services at the Capulin Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Parish in La Jara, Colo. Romero Funeral Home of Alamosa is in care of the arrangements.
