Martinez chips in two, Moose roll

ALAMOSA— Alamosa came away with a 37-7 victory over Buena Vista at home Friday night in a game that got off to a late start.  With kickoff near 9:30 only the most dedicated fandom of prep sports was left standing when the clock showed zeros. The game carried on until almost midnight, the final gun didn’t sound until 11:43.

Alamosa didn’t let the falling temps cool them as they started hot for the second week in a row taking the opening possession down the field and accenting a 75-yard drive with a 30-yard run by John Lujan to open things up at 6-0. Lujan would wind up with 35 yards on the ground and 167 yards through the air contributing 2 touchdowns.

Dorian Lavier covered a fumble the very next drive giving Alamosa a short field that Reis Martinez took advantage of for a 34-yard fumble making it 13-0. Chad Jackson would find some room in the secondary to haul in a 67-yard touchdown to bail his offense out of a 3rd and 9 to make the score 20 nil. That was Jackson’s lone catch of the night.

Their following possession was hampered by penalties and would stall allowing Katie Gallegos to put one in from 26 yards out and the Moose would close the half 23-0.

The Demons would take the ball in the third stanza and after falling behind in the down and distance would turn yet another possession over on downs. Alamosa unleashed Reis — in 5 plays he got 4 touches and racked up 44 yards and his second and final touchdown to end his and many of his fellow starter’s nights. Martinez would close out the night with 133 yards on 10 carries for 13 yards every time he touched the ball.

From then on Alamosa was in full clock burning mode, keeping the ball on the ground for much of the remainder of the game. The Demons would narrowly avoid a shutout with a touchdown in the fourth quarter to bring the contest to its final score of 37-7.

This game carried much different tones than the last time these two teams met. Previously Buena Vista came away with the victory narrowly edging Alamosa 22-21. Look for Alamosa next Friday Sept. 8th at 7 p.m. The Mean Moose take on the La Junta Tigers. La Junta is 1-0 coming off a 42-0 thrashing of Gunnison. The Tigers are ranked #3 in 2A.
