Marilyn Storm Smith

Marilyn Storm Smith, 94, passed away on Feb. 28, 2025, in Canon City, Colo. Born on Feb. 23, 1931, in Pueblo, Colo., Marilyn grew up in Blanca, Colo., until she moved to Canon City, Colo., in 2005.  

She graduated from Centennial High School in Pueblo in 1948 before pursuing higher education at Adams State University in Alamosa, where she earned her teaching degree in 1969.  Before becoming an educator, Marilyn worked for various employers as a secretary and bookkeeper. 

After earning her degree, she dedicated herself to shaping young minds and spent the remainder of her career as a teacher at Sierra Grande School in Blanca, Colo. Marilyn retired from teaching in 1989. 

Marilyn’s life was filled with strength, grace, honor, and love – qualities that endeared her to all who knew her.  She found joy in reading, bowling, solving crossword puzzles, and playing cards.  These simple pleasures brought her happiness and created cherished memories with family and friends.  Her greatest joy was being with her family. 

Marilyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Howard K. Smith; her parents, William Preston Storm of Canon City, Colo., and Bessie Lee (McClintock) Storm of Blanca, Colo. 

She is survived by her daughter Barbara (Mark) Alumbaugh; son Kelly (Sylvia) Smith; grandson Kevin Alumbaugh; granddaughter Kyela (Ryan) Smith-Heagney; great-grandson Ryelan Heagney; and great-granddaughter Kynle Rae Heagney. 

A funeral service will be held on March 6, 2025, at Wilson Funeral Home, located at 1449 S. 9th St., Canon City, CO 81212, at 11 a.m. with a reception to follow.  A second funeral service will take place on March 7, 2025, at Calvary Blanca Church at 607 Broadway Ave., Blanca, CO 81123, beginning at 1 p.m. Burial will follow at the Blanca Cemetery with a reception afterward at the church. 

Marilyn’s legacy of kindness and dedication to others will live on through those whose lives she touched. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her.
