Antonito resident Lucy T. Jaramillo passed away on Jan. 18, 2025. Lucy was born Jan. 28, 1923, in Alamosa, Colo.
Lucy was a lifelong musician and recently received the Hilos Culturales Lifetime Music Award, Premio Hilos Culturales in 2020.
Growing up in Alamosa, Lucy loved to play her guitar and sing. In her teens, she became a regular on KGIW's Spanish language music. Lucy sang at village church fiestas in the surrounding communities of Lobatos, San Antonio, San Rafael, Las Mesitas, Conejos, Antonito and belonged to the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
Lucy composed religious songs throughout her lifetime. Some of her music is in the permanent collection of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. Lucy's music recordings are also in the archive collections of the International Folk Art Museum in Santa Fe and the J.D. Robb Center for Southwest Research and Special Collections at the Zimmerman Library, University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
Lucy was a member of the Christian Mothers, SPMDTU, the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and Conejos County Senior Citizens.
Lucy enjoyed camping, cooking, singing, spending time at the Osier cabin, dancing, and most of all spending time with her husband Ray and her family on the Jaramillo Ranch.
Survivors include daughters Virginia (Steve) Lujan, Antonito, Roberta Pacheco, Albuquerque, Lisa (Steve) Atencio, Colorado Springs, and Teresa Jaramillo, Albuquerque, two sons, Tony (Anna Marie) Jaramillo, Albuquerque, David (Linda) Jaramillo, Alamosa, many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
Lucy was preceded in death by her husband Ray Jaramillo, her sons Edward and Juan, her daughter Juanita, her parents, her sisters Ida Dopp and Cecilia Ortega, and her brother Robert Trujillo.
A viewing for Lucy will be held on Friday, Jan. 24, 2025, from 12 to 4 p.m. at The Romero Valley Funeral Chapel in Antonito with the Rosary to follow at 6 p.m. at our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Conejos. The Mass of Resurrection will be held on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, at 10 a.m. with Interment to follow at the Lajara Cemetery.
