Larry Schockey, beloved husband, father and grandfather, left this world richer than he found it on May 13, 2025, at his home in Monte Vista, Colo. Born on Jan. 4, 1941, in the heart of Caldwell, Idaho, to Charlie and Ruby Gordon Schockey, Larry's journey through life was one that exemplified love of family, a sense of adventure, and a curiosity for the world's wonders.
He shared an extraordinary life with his loving wife of 63 years, Peggy Hart Schockey, and together they raised a family that became his pride and joy. Their children, Denise Heersink and Chris Schockey, flourished under his guidance, while his granddaughters, Victoria and Alexandra, added sparkle to his wise eyes. Larry is survived by his sister, Glenda Watkins, and sister-in-law, Judy Wert, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Professionally, Larry dedicated his life to the field of agriculture, protecting the integrity of Colorado's staple crops as a Potato Inspector for the USDA. His commitment to excellence continued as he managed Tri-Me Potato in Monte Vista, where his 23 years of service until retirement were marked by respect and admiration from colleagues and the community alike.
A man of many passions, Larry harbored a particular enthusiasm for technology and innovation. A gadget was a friend in mystery, and he met each new technological advance with child-like excitement. Alongside Peggy, they traveled many miles on their motorcycle with friends and family. Whether it was serene moments shared on their houseboat on Lake Powell or active days boating on Navajo Lake, these experiences became the weave of their family narrative.
Their love for camping sealed their bond with nature and each other in their earlier years, reflecting a commitment to living life to the fullest. Larry embodied the spirit of a man who held his family at the core of his being, finding his greatest joy in their laughter and his greatest pride in their achievements.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Eva Dell Caudill, Audrey “Pat” Head, Jo Scaman, Gordon Dale Schockey, Gary Schockey, Cheryl Lewis, Kay Thomas, and his son-in-law Verlyn “Skip” Heersink.
Cremation was chosen and a private Celebration of Life will take place at a future date.
