Jose E. Martinez, a cherished family patriarch, decorated combat veteran, and community stalwart, passed away at the age of 90 in Alamosa, Colo., due to natural causes. Born on Feb. 8, 1934, in Los Cerritos, Colo., to Fermin and Ofrencia (Pacheco) Martinez, Jose led a life marked by dedication to his loved ones and to his country.
Jose's journey alongside his beloved Lillian Madrid Martinez commenced in sacred matrimony on July 30, 1957, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Denver. Their union was a testament to enduring partnership, celebrated through 67 years of love, challenges, and triumphs. Together, they raised a family that included their son Dale Martinez (Delores Mondragon) of Manassa, Colo., and daughter Josette Martinez of Manassa, Colo. Jose was a brother to Orly, Cordy, and Arlene, and his good friends Janet Vigil and Carl Atencio and was warmly regarded by his many nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Jose proudly donned the uniform of the United States Marine Corps, serving valiantly during the tumultuous times of the Vietnam conflict. His military career was marked by a commitment to duty and country, earning the respect and admiration of those with whom he served. Upon his retirement from military service, Jose continued to live a life characterized by the values he upheld as a Marine.
His interests, as diverse as his life experiences, saw him often revel in the ambiance of the OhKay Casino in New Mexico, where he enjoyed gambling. Additionally, Jose was known for his fondness for playing Bingo, reveling in the camaraderie and excitement of the game.
Jose E. Martinez will be remembered as a wise man who led by example, his life's narrative a testament to integrity, resilience, and unwavering love for his family. His legacy remains a beacon for all who knew him, and he will be deeply missed. Jose was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Freddy, Joe, Ramon, and Lydia. As we bid farewell, we do so with a profound sense of gratitude for the remarkable life and enduring spirit of Jose E. Martinez.
A memorial mass will be held on Thursday, July 11, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic church followed by interment at the Manassa-Romeo Cemetery.
