John Patterson, 64, of Monte Vista, CO, passed away on December 08, 2022. He was in a terrible accident, but was on the mend for a few weeks when he was suddenly found unresponsive. He had many visits by loved ones up until he passed at a care center.
John was born on February 02, 1958 to Marie and Carrol Patterson of the San Luis Valley. Soon after that, his brother, Mark, was born and they grew up as wild as any valley kids really do. They both played in multiple high school State Championships alongside great friends that still gather to this day.
After John graduated from Sargent high school in 1976, he pursued a degree in agriculture at Fort Lewis College while simultaneously cultivating a new family. John graduated, then worked in agriculture for his entire adult life until he passed.
When we think of this San Luis Valley it is hard not to think of our ancestors. John was proud to be in a family that has pioneered the SLV for 5 whole generations! He always said, "I'm from this dirt and to this dirt I'll return." He stayed in the SLV his entire life. John married his high school sweetheart, Kathy, and they raised Jason and Leah with strong ethical roots that grew deeper than any potato.
John was passionate about potato farming and loved it so much that he made sculptures out of old metal farm scraps. Most people I know own a piece of his whimsical and colorful "Farm Art" sculptures. John knew each part had an ancient story to tell. He loved the process of putting the parts together and painting those sculptures so much!
John was active in many communities; he gave back through his art, his stories, and his willingness to share moments with a complete stranger or an age-old friend. Marie, his mother, would tell you that John formed relationships wherever he went; whether it be people at festivals who love his "Farm Art" sculptures or people at the grocery store. So many people loved this guy, and he loved so many right back. Any time you wonder about the stars or distant planets, think of him and know he is there.
John Patterson is survived by many family members including his brother Mark, his mother Marie, his daughter Leah, his son Jason, and Kathy Box Klimper. Yet, he is also survived by his farm family, his art family, and his spiritual family. His roots within this community ran deep.
Please plan on joining a celebration of life for John at Blue Barn Farms on July 1st 2023. His ashes will be spread in the San Juan mountains. In lieu of flowers, or even if you just feel moved, please consider a donation to https://gofund.me/003195d0.
