Longtime Alamosa resident John Martinez Jr., 85 passed away on Jan. 26, 2024, at San Luis Valley Health in Alamosa, surrounded by his loving family. John was born on Sept. 12, 1938, in Monte Vista, Colo., the beloved son of John Paul Martinez and Lydia Trujillo Martinez.
He was united in marriage to the love of his life Barbara Naranjo on July 26, 1958, in Denver, Colo. They shared a happy and loving union until her passing in February of 2023.
John enjoyed being outdoors. He loved to spend his time fishing, hunting, and camping. But his favorite was the time he spent with his loving family. John will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
His legacy will live on through his children; Marie Ann (Terry Goette) of Missouri, Jonetta Martinez (Juan Lucero) of Alamosa, Colo.; son Eddie Martinez (Sandra Hoff) of Alamosa, Colo., daughter-in-law Myra Martinez of Alamosa, Colo., sister DeeDee Martinez of Commerce City, Colo., brother Max (Joyce) Martinez of Commerce City, Colo., seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
John was preceded in death by his parents, wife Barbara Martinez, daughter Bobbie Martinez, son Tony “T-Bone” Martinez, brothers Richard, Larry, Robert, Ernie, Toby, and Joe Martinez, two sisters Margaret Lovato, and Louise Otero.
Services for John will be held on Thursday, Feb. 1, 2024, with the recitation of the Most Holy Rosary at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with the Mass of Resurrection to follow at 10 a.m. also at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Inurnment to follow at Alamosa Cemetery.
