Joe A. Mondragon

Joe A. Mondragon, a cherished resident of Alamosa, Colo., passed away on May 7, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born Ranchos De Taos, N.M., on March 12, 1930, to Alex Alejandro and Maria Mondragon, Joe lived a life full of adventure and love. 

He was united in marriage to Edemia Vigil, with whom he shared many beautiful years. 

Joe had a passion for the great outdoors, enjoying camping, fishing, and hunting. His daily cruises brought him joy, as did his love for boxing and watching westerns. 

He was a master storyteller, captivating his family with tales from his life, and cherished the time spent with them. 

He is survived by his daughters, Judy Mondragon of Alamosa, Irene and George Lopez of Alamosa, and Joan and Bonifacio Garcia of Monte Vista; his son Robert and Susan Mondragon of Pueblo, and Orlando and Dora Mondragon of Denver. Joe was also the proud grandfather of 17 grandchildren, as well as numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He is survived by his sister, Eleanor Hernandez of Alamosa. 

Joe was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Edemia Vigil Mondragon; his parents, Alex Alejandro and Maria Mondragon; his brothers, Orlando, Theodore and Antonio Mondragon; and his sisters, Isabelle Medina and Berlinda Mondragon. 

Services for Joe were held on Tuesday, May 13, with a viewing from 12 to 4 p.m. at Romero Funeral Home in Alamosa followed by a Rosary at 7 p.m. also at Romero Valley Funeral Home. A Mass of Resurrection took place on Wednesday, May 14, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Alamosa, with interment was at the Spanish Cemetery in Alamosa.
