High school football preview – Week 10

State playoff spots on the line in several games

ALAMOSA – The 2024 high school football regular season will come to an end for the San Luis Valley teams this weekend with all but one local school in action.

Here are thumbnail sketches of this week’s games.

ANTONITO (0-6, 0-4) AT PRIMERO (5-2, 2-2)

This week: The Antonito Trojans will travel to Weston to face the Primero Bulldogs today. Kickoff is at 5:30 p.m.

Last week: The Trojans had an open date. The Bulldogs lost to Branson/Kim at home, 36-32.

Next week: Season completed for Antonito. Primero is still in contention to qualify for the state playoffs.

#4 CENTAURI (8-0 4-0) AT MONTE VISTA (6-2, 4-0)

This week: The fourth-ranked Centauri Falcons will travel to take on the Monte Vista Pirates on Friday. Game time at Harvey Sullivan Field is at 6 p.m.

Last week: The Falcons defeated Trinidad 54-14 on the road on Saturday. The Pirates defeated Ignacio 32-8 in a road game on Friday.

Next week: Both teams are in contention for a playoff berth. The winner will earn an automatic berth.

PAGOSA SPRINGS (5-3, 2-2) AT ALAMOSA (5-3, 3-1)

This week: The Alamosa Mean Moose will host the Pagosa Springs Pirates on Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Last week: The Mean Moose defeated Salida 26-7 on the road last Saturday. The Pirates defeated Montezuma-Cortez 42-21 at home also last Friday.

Next week: Both teams are in contention to qualify for state, but both need to win to secure a spot.

SANFORD (5-3, 3-1) AT #7 DOVE CREEK (7-1, 3-1)

This week: The Sanford Mustangs will travel to meet the seventh-ranked Dove Creek Bulldogs on Friday starting at 3 p.m.

Last week: The Mustangs defeated Dolores 51-17 on the road last Friday. The Bulldogs defeated Sargent 60-8 on the road also last Friday.

Next week: Both teams are in contention for a state playoff position.

SANGRE DE CRISTO (1-6, 1-3) AT CUSTER COUNTY (0-8, 0-4)

This week: The Sangre de Cristo Thunderbirds will travel to Westcliffe to face the Custer County Bobcats on Friday. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.

Last week: The Thunderbirds lost to Crowley County 50-6 at home last Saturday. The Bobcats lost to Hoehne 50-0 on the road last Friday.

Next week: Season completed for both teams.

SARGENT (3-5, 1-3) AT #3 MANCOS (7-1, 4-0)

This week: The Sargent Farmers will be on the road to take on the third-ranked Mancos Bluejays on Friday. Kickoff is at 6 p.m.

Last week: The Farmers lost to seventh-ranked Dove Creek 60-8 at home last Friday. The Bluejays defeated Norwood 46-16 at home also last Friday.

Next week: Sargent’s season is completed. Mancos will advance to the eight-man state playoffs.

#5 SIERRA GRANDE (8-0, 5-0), IDLE

This week: The Sierra Grande Panthers will have an open date.

Last week: The Panthers defeated La Veta 56-14 on the road last Thursday.

Next week: Sierra Grande will advance to the six-man state playoffs.

TRINIDAD (2-5, 1-3) AT CENTER (1-7, 1-3)

This week: The Center Vikings will host the Trinidad Miners on Friday. Game time is at 1 p.m.

Last week: The Vikings picked up a forfeit wins as Del Norte had canceled the remainder of its varsity season. The Miners lost to fourth-ranked Centauri 54-14 at home last Saturday.

Next week: Season completed for both teams.
