Posted

Well known Alamosa resident Harvey Harold Horton passed away tragically on Nov. 19, 2024, at the age of 77. Born on Aug. 21, 1947, in Alamosa, Colo., to George and Phyllis (Carr) Horton, Harvey was a lifelong resident of Alamosa.

Harvey was a respected dispatcher for the Colorado State Patrol out of Alamosa for 30 some years, where his intelligence and dedication made him a valuable asset to the force. His colleagues will remember him as a man who was not only good at his job but also brought a sense of calm and reality to every situation.

Harvey was an avid lover of guns, shooting, hunting, and reloading. He and Zina used to travel for competition shooting sporting clays. Recently they acquired some honeybees, he absolutely loved bees.  He would deliver fresh honey to friends and family for their birthdays.

Known for his reserved nature, Harvey was also a man who never met a stranger. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and was known for his lengthy and engaging talks with friends and family, which he thoroughly enjoyed. His selflessness was evident in his readiness to help others, often going out of his way to lend a hand. A hard worker, Harvey always had a second job.

In the kitchen, Harvey's love for cooking was another way he expressed his care for those around him. At church, his thoughtfulness shone through as he handed out fireballs and life savers, already unwrapped to avoid any noise that might disrupt the service. He loved music from the ‘50s and '60s and always had music playing.

Those left to carry on his love and legacy are his loving spouse Zina of Alamosa; sister Nancy (Richard) Adamson of Glendale, Ariz.; and, sister-in-law, Bette Horton, of Antonito, nieces, Karen Martinez, Janet Davidson, Glenda Smith and nephew Jimmy Horton; sisters-in-law Tanya (Kirk) McBride of Benson, Ariz.; Hilda Hunter of Alamosa and adopted family Robyn and Brandon Shawcroft, and their children Porter, Riley, Chet, and Dalley – he was known to them as papa Harvey; his children Lori Maul and Jake Horton; and his grandchildren Ashley, Jesse, and Scout.

Preceding him in death were his parents, George and Phyllis Horton, his brother Jim Horton, his son Jesse Horton; his brother-in-law Larry Hunter, his sister-in-law/brother-in-law Cindy and Byron Smith; along with many aunts and uncles who all helped shape the man he became.

There will be a Funeral Service on Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 11 a.m. in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 927 Weber Dr., Alamosa. Followed by interment in the Sanford Cemetery.
