Harold ‘Hal’ David Dyer

Harold “Hal” David Dyer, 100, passed away on Jan. 19, 2023. Hal had two loves in his life, his family and serving in the US Navy. Hal had a big heart and there was plenty of room for his family and the friends and friendships he nurtured throughout his lifetime.

Hal served in the US Navy from 1942, until his retirement in 1969 at the rank of Lieutenant. He served with honor through three wars and many conflicts. Family and friends were often regaled with stories of his life and service-related adventures and adversities. From his youth on the Lake of the Ozarks, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the many ports around the world that he visited throughout his time in the Navy, to his exploits on the set of Tora! Tora! Tora! we never tired of hearing his stories.

After his retirement he moved his family to Prescott, Ariz., where he became a Real Estate Agent. Hal and his wife, Helen, then moved to Seligman, Ariz., where he continued as a realtor for many years. They lived in Seligman for 40 years and were an integral part of the Seligman community. Hal worked as a volunteer in the Seligman School library and was also involved with the care and upkeep of the town cemetery and historical society.

After his wife of almost 60 years passed on, he made one final move to Monte Vista, Colo., near family, where he forged new friendships, while still maintaining his connection to family and the friendships he built over the years.

Hal is survived by his children, Harold (Helen) David Dyer, Jr. of Monte Vista, Colo., and Anita L. (John) (John) Kett of Prescott, Ariz., two grandchildren, Joshua (Kelly) Kett and Jennifer (Matthew) Bergamini,  and five great-grandchildren as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Hazel (Field) Dyer, his wife Helen Dyer and his brothers, James E. Dyer and Roy O. Dyer.

In 2022, Hal achieved a milestone that few are able to reach, he celebrated his 100th birthday with family and friends.

Hal will be cremated, and his remains will be interred with his wife in the Seligman Cemetery, and a burial at sea. It is difficult to encapsulate his life in only a few sentences, though he has left us, he lives on through his stories, his family, and his friendships. Fair winds and following seas.
