MONTE VISTA— Longtime Monte Vista resident Gary C. Mason, 71, died Nov. 30, 2018 at his home in Monte Vista, surrounded by his family and under hospice care.
Gary was born in Abilene, Texas on March 3, 1947 the son of Frank Clark and Marion Inez George Mason. He married his wife of more than 34 years, Nancy Lynn Swanson on Jan. 14, 1984 in Creede.
Gary served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam war and was honorably discharged in 1969. He did ranch work and outfitting for many years and also had a Leatherworking business. Gary enjoyed hunting and fishing in the outdoors, horses, leatherwork and in his spare time liked to work on home improvement projects. He also tinkered with mechanics and had a great love for his dogs and their companionship.
Gary is survived by his wife Nancy Mason of Monte Vista; his son Joshua (Gail) Mason of Golden, Colo.; his grandchildren Skylar and Tanner Mason; nephews Derek (Lea) Harden and Jerrod Swanson; his siblings Danella Miller of Denver and Marion Mondragon of Denver; his sister-in-law Bonnie Swanson-Harden of Westminster, Colo.; as well as many good friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his siblings Denton Pope and Timothy Pope and his sister-in-law Jill Swanson.
