ALAMOSA — A tragic accident occurred in the pre-dawn hours of Monday morning, Oct. 21, resulting in the death of four horses.
According to Capt. Nate Lyons with the Colorado State Patrol, a 66-year-old local woman driving a Nissan Frontier was in the vicinity of County Road 8S and 102S when, shortly after 5 a.m., she struck and killed four horses who were standing in the middle of the road. The woman was not injured, according to CSP.
State patrol officers on the scene said there was no indication that excessive speed was an issue.
Lyons said the owner of the horses, who lives on CR4E and CR6S, drove to the scene and loaded the horses’ bodies on a skid. He told a corporal that “the horses had been used for hunting by individuals over the weekend.”
This is the second accident in three months that has resulted in the death of multiple horses after being struck by a vehicle.
“It’s just a case of tragic circumstances,” said Lyons, who is familiar with the area. “There’s no shoulder along that stretch of road so there was nowhere for the driver or the horses to go. It’s just a terrible thing to have happened.”
