ALAMOSA — During a routine cell check at the Alamosa County Detention Center early Sunday morning, an unresponsive female inmate was found in her cell.

The 41-year-old woman was discovered at 7:19 a.m., at which time deputies and EMS staff performed life-saving measures. Unfortunately, she was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Joe Dzuris, Alamosa County Coroner, has identified the woman as Erica Ann Martinez. The Valley Courier reached Dzuris when he was returning to Alamosa after an autopsy on Martinez had been completed, the results of which, he says, confirmed there was no foul play.

Alamosa County Sheriff Robert Jackson has contacted the Colorado Bureau of Investigation and requested a thorough investigation of the incident. According to a statement from the Sheriff’s Office, this is an ongoing investigation, and no further details will be released at this time.
